Shade Murray, LLMSW
Meet Shade.
Sometimes the hardest part of therapy is simply finding a place where you can think clearly, feel understood, and move forward with confidence.
Shade believes therapy should feel genuine, practical, and grounded in real life—not overly clinical or filled with unnecessary jargon. His goal is to create a space where you can better understand yourself, navigate challenges with clarity, and make meaningful, lasting change.
With warmth, curiosity, and directness, Shade partners with clients to help them build on their strengths while developing practical tools for the future. Whether you're navigating relationships, career decisions, anxiety, depression, trauma, or major life transitions, therapy is tailored to your unique goals rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Outside of clinical practice, Shade serves as a professor at the University of Chicago and as a Director in Chicago, bringing extensive experience as both an educator and organizational leader. Shade’s work is informed by psychological training as well as more than two decades of experience as a creative professional and university instructor, allowing him to bring both intellectual depth and real-world perspective into the therapy room.
My Approach to Therapy.
Therapy with Shade feels like a thoughtful conversation with someone who is both invested in your growth and willing to challenge you when needed. His style is collaborative, straightforward, and compassionate, balancing insight with practical strategies that can be applied outside the therapy office.
Clients often describe his approach as genuine, grounded, and refreshingly direct. Rather than focusing on labels, Shade helps clients organize their thoughts and emotions, identify patterns, recognize their strengths, and develop realistic goals that lead to meaningful change.
He believes that lasting growth comes through curiosity, reflection, honesty, patience, and self-compassion. Therapy is not about becoming someone different—it's about discovering the healthiest, most authentic version of yourself.
